Mini-Meetup Challenge
Normally, we all meet in a large group to discuss ways we can fight human trafficking. This month, there are a lot of scheduling issues so we challenge you to find a friend and hold your own mini-meetup. You may simply meet a friend for coffee to discuss why you care about this issue and how they can help, or you may choose one of the following activities:
Coffee with a Purpose
Set a date with a friend to discuss modern slavery and how they can help. I’ll be at the Starbucks at Hollywood and Western from 7:00 to 8:00 on Wednesday, Dec. 10 (our normal meeting time) if you’d like to brainstorm and get more ideas, materials or info – or just share a cup of fair trade coffee.
Slave Free Scavenger Hunt
Visit your local Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods or other grocery store on a hunt for fair trade coffee and chocolate to give as gifts. If you can’t find it, ASK and let the manager know that buying fair trade is important to you.
Volunteer for January 11th Observance
Efforts are already underway now to gain commitments from 500 churches in Los Angeles County to acknowledge National Human Trafficking Awareness Day as part of their worship or outreach activities. You can help! Contact Cindy Norman or Monica Carrasco at lacountyunity@gmail.
com to get a list of churches to call or volunteer to help with the mailing and other work around this day. If you’ve gotten your church involved, let the Unity Coalition know so it can be counted!
Schedule your own Screening
Ok, films about trafficking can be a little dark, but if you invite some friends over it won’t be so bad. Spend the time you would spend in the Meetup meeting finding a good location and date (maybe your living room or your church the week of January 11th? ) and making your guest list. Some suggestions:
Documentaries:
Rescue and Restore (available for free from me or at rescueandrestore.org
)
Stolen Childhoods (available from Netflix or at StolenChildhoods.org
)
Fiction (all widely available)
Crash
Human Trafficking
Trade
Do Your Christmas Shopping
Ten Thousand Villages in Pasadena is a great way to buy beautiful fair trade gifts locally.
496 South Lake Avenue
Pasadena, CA 91101
The eco-gift Festival in Santa Monica this weekend, Dec. 12-14, will also feature several fair trade items. If you prefer to shop online you have a few options too. Ten Thousand Villages has an online shop as well as the store, but there’s also
Made by Survivors from the Emancipation network and Global Exchange, which features tons of socially conscious gifts. And for the sports lover, there’s even Fair Trade Sports.
Hope these ideas help!
We’re going to send you a poll to see how you plan to participate – feel free to mark more than one answer or e-mail us your suggestions. All we ask is that you choose an activity and do it in December.
Thanks for being part of the modern abolition movement.
