Thanks to everyone who made the last Meetup such a huge success. We packed 13 freedom bags -- half our goal of 25. CAST social workers are already using these wonderful bags to help clients rescued from trafficking situations.

We are doing an inventory and will let you know more details, but two items CAST particularly needs with some urgency are bath towels and t-shirts. We only received 3 towels so the other backpacks don't have them. If you have an extra $5 this week, please consider spending it on a bath towel. Many victims relish their first shower once they are rescued, and having their own towel instead of a borrowed, used one would mean a lot. T-Shirts are useful for sleeping in and usually needed until a wardrobe can be obtained.

If you have a resource or connection that could arrange a donation of several towels or t-shirts, let us know. We can provide documentation of the donation if necessary -- just contact Lisa Helene to arrange the details and delivery.

On May 13th, we're going to finish packing the bags, discuss how to play this successful project forward, and consider our summer outreach activities. There have been several suggestions, including starting satellite groups in the South Bay and San Fernando Valley and visiting Farmers Markets to raise awareness in the local agricultural community. Come with your ideas -- we'll talk while we work. We will also fill you in on the June Nightlife event.

Thanks again for the wonderful generosity of everyone able to participate last month. If you've been unable to participate due to scheduling or location, tell us what night and area would work for you.

At your service,

Grant, Lisa Helene & Jacqueline

What do backpacks have to do with survivors of human trafficking you ask?

The Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking, a non-profit in Los Angeles, desperately needs backpacks filled with essential items like toiletries, clean clothes, and snacks. The social services professionals at CAST occasionally need these backpacks at a moment's notice when they are rescuing people from human trafficking. As a Meetup group, we are going to help provide these crucial emergency kits!

We need you to bring any of the following. For clothing, make sure it is new:

toothbrush
toothpaste
shampoo
conditioner
soap / shower gel
washcloth / sponge
comb / brush
hair ties
compact mirror
socks
bra / panties
t-shirt
bath towel
snack items (crackers, cookies)
flip-flops
small notebook
pen/pencil
manila folder or full-sized mailing envelope

Please let us know what you can bring.

Join us and help us make these backpacks that will have a direct impact when people are rescued.

On Thursday, March 5, in honor of International Women’s Day,( which is March 8th) the acclaimed documentary “A Powerful Noise,” will be featured in 450 movie theatres nationwide. This is a one-night event, which takes you inside the lives of three women from different countries to witness their daily efforts to fight HIV/AIDS, champion girls’ education and unite ethnically divided communities.

The film will be immediately followed by a town hall discussion with expert and celebrity panelists – including Nicholas Kristof, Madeleine Albright, Christy Turlington Burns and Dr. Helene Gayle, President of CARE USA - broadcast live from New York City to participating theatres.

Our Meetup will attend the screening at AMC Century City. However, if more convenient for you, feel free to join any other screening in a theater closer to you. For participating theaters see website below.

We're going to meet @ 7:45pm outside the showroom. Just look out for an 'LA Fight Human Trafficking Meetup' sign.

Dear all,

hope this message finds you well!

It's time to roll up our sleeves again and renew the Meetup's commitment to fighting human trafficking in Southern California.

Please join us for an evening filled with information about how the new administration is planning on fighting human trafficking and a screening and discussion of the short documentary "Dreams Die Hard".

It is also time to decide and plan on a new hands-on public awareness or fundraising event in our local communities.

Here are a few options to ponder, but new ideas for events are of course always welcome:

* Public screening of 'Call&Response' or 'Amazing Grace'; ticket sales go to local anti-human trafficking non-profit
* 'Made by Survivors' product sale house party
* Grassroots photographs - hold a 'Slavery still exists' photo table

We truly hope to see many of you on February 11!

Have a wonderful day!

In light of the National Human Trafficking Awareness Day on Jan. 11, 2009, we are going to have a Meetup so that you can tell your friends about human trafficking. We will watch a film/documentary covering the basics of human trafficking along with a Q and A session afterward. Our goal will be to educate people who are unaware of modern day slavery so that they can walk out of the meeting with the ability to speak out against it.

So bring a friend (or many friends) to this Meetup! We'd love to see you there!

Mini-Meetup Challenge

Normally, we all meet in a large group to discuss ways we can fight human trafficking. This month, there are a lot of scheduling issues so we challenge you to find a friend and hold your own mini-meetup. You may simply meet a friend for coffee to discuss why you care about this issue and how they can help, or you may choose one of the following activities:

Coffee with a Purpose

Set a date with a friend to discuss modern slavery and how they can help. I’ll be at the Starbucks at Hollywood and Western from 7:00 to 8:00 on Wednesday, Dec. 10 (our normal meeting time) if you’d like to brainstorm and get more ideas, materials or info – or just share a cup of fair trade coffee.

Slave Free Scavenger Hunt

Visit your local Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods or other grocery store on a hunt for fair trade coffee and chocolate to give as gifts. If you can’t find it, ASK and let the manager know that buying fair trade is important to you.

Volunteer for January 11th Observance

Efforts are already underway now to gain commitments from 500 churches in Los Angeles County to acknowledge National Human Trafficking Awareness Day as part of their worship or outreach activities. You can help! Contact Cindy Norman or Monica Carrasco at lacountyunity@gmail.com to get a list of churches to call or volunteer to help with the mailing and other work around this day. If you’ve gotten your church involved, let the Unity Coalition know so it can be counted!

Schedule your own Screening

Ok, films about trafficking can be a little dark, but if you invite some friends over it won’t be so bad. Spend the time you would spend in the Meetup meeting finding a good location and date (maybe your living room or your church the week of January 11th? ) and making your guest list. Some suggestions:

Documentaries:
Rescue and Restore (available for free from me or at rescueandrestore.org)
Stolen Childhoods (available from Netflix or at StolenChildhoods.org)

Fiction (all widely available)
Crash
Human Trafficking
Trade

Do Your Christmas Shopping
Ten Thousand Villages in Pasadena is a great way to buy beautiful fair trade gifts locally.
496 South Lake Avenue
Pasadena, CA 91101

The eco-gift Festival in Santa Monica this weekend, Dec. 12-14, will also feature several fair trade items. If you prefer to shop online you have a few options too. Ten Thousand Villages has an online shop as well as the store, but there’s also

Made by Survivors from the Emancipation network and Global Exchange, which features tons of socially conscious gifts. And for the sports lover, there’s even Fair Trade Sports.

Hope these ideas help!

We’re going to send you a poll to see how you plan to participate – feel free to mark more than one answer or e-mail us your suggestions. All we ask is that you choose an activity and do it in December.

Thanks for being part of the modern abolition movement.

Join us for an exceptional meeting on November 12 featuring two special highlights.

First, we'll have the great honor of welcoming Wendy, a survivor of human trafficking, as a guestspeaker for the evening. Wendy will share with us some personal insights into the horrendous world of human trafficking and, more importantly, will let us know how we as a community group can help to stop human trafficking and help to support survivors.

Second, we'll also discuss the emerging plans for January 11, 2009 -- National Human Trafficking Awareness Day and how the meetup can participate and assist the task forces/unity coalition with their events.

There are various possibilities and opportunities for involvement ranging from connecting with farmers' markets to participating in interfaith events to broadening the Orange County Task Force and Unity Coalition efforts to show a short video in 1,000 churches.

You can make a difference in the modern abolition movement -- join us!
